Original Poster Palais de Glace - Champs-Élysées, by Jules Chéret - Circa 1890
This charming poster, created around 1890 by Jules Chéret - undisputed master of Belle Époque illustration -transports us to the fashionable and carefree Paris of early figure skating. Commissioned for the Palais de Glace, a popular leisure venue on the Champs-Élysées, it captures the playful elegance of Parisian winter pastimes.
At the heart of the composition, a young woman twirls gracefully across the ice in a bright red coat trimmed with fur. Her fluid silhouette, stylized movement, and bold color palette - blue, red, green, and white - perfectly convey the moment and the festive spirit of the scene. In the background, a few sketch-like figures extend the action, blended into a choreography of lines and colors so typical of Chéret’s touch.
Printed by the renowned Chaix press, this lithograph, measuring approximately 23.6 x 15.9 inches, is linen-backed and in B+ condition. Despite minor signs of age, it retains all of its decorative charm. A fine example of Chéret’s graphic refinement, he stands as a pioneer of the “affichiste” style and a founding figure in the history of advertising art.
