This original Air France travel poster is a lithograph printed in 1951 by Edicta, Paris. Designed by Billon (1889-1976) to promote Paris, it refers to the Parisis, the name given to the original Gallic tribe who settled along the Seine two thousand years ago. On this very spot, the Iron Lady reaches out towards the sky towering over all neighbouring monuments. The artist chose to represent this emblem of Paris and more generally of France, as a mast to carry a sail and make its silhouette somewhat like a ship, the official symbol of the French capital, whose motto is "Fluctuat nec mergitur" (It is rocked, but does not sink). The four other landmarks of the city featured in this vintage poster are Notre-Dame, the Arc de Triomphe, The Cathedral of Saint-Louis des Invalides and the Pantheon.
