Original Air France Poster - Mexico, by Jean Colin - 1957
Straight from the golden age of travel posters, this original lithograph by Jean Colin, created in 1957, captures the visual elegance and exotic allure of a once-mythical destination: Mexico. Commissioned by the prestigious airline Air France, it invites the viewer to escape through a stylized composition rooted in the pre-Columbian imagination.
At the center, a red figure evoking Toltec or Aztec iconography, crowned with stylized feathers, asserts its graphic presence against a luminous azure background. Bold color blocks - serpentine greens, radiant yellows, deep reds - vividly convey the vibrant energy of Mexican culture. Colin, a master of suggestive abstraction, blends modernism and tradition in a visual language that was strikingly contemporary for its time - and remains impactful today.
Printed in Paris by the Courbet workshop, this poster is presented here in its linen-backed version, in excellent condition (grade A). Its generous format - approximately 39.4 x 24.8 inches - makes it a statement piece, emblematic of Air France’s visual identity during the 1950s. A refined testament to the art of advertising and a time when aviation opened the world’s doors with grandeur.
